Not two weeks have passed since Americans became familiarized with the pink slime found in our ground beef, and major supermarket chains have publicly come out stating they will not be selling pink slime products anymore. This is a huge win for consumers. Whether you agree that leftover meat scraps treated with ammonia should be used as a filler in ground beef or not, you can’t ignore the controversy. While scientists argue over the efficacy and safety of using these previously unused meat scraps, grocers have realized it will be wiser to listen to their customers than to lose business. Makes you wonder what else we can achieve if enough of us band together to protest food industry shenanigans. Ideas that immediately come to mind – GMO labeling, artificial colorings, controversial additives such as BHT and TBHQ, and BPA lining in cans. For your convenience, here is a list of major grocers that have announced they are not using pink slime, or are phasing it out in the next few weeks:
