Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!

If you’re not familiar with Irish Oatmeal, treat yourself to some steel cut goodness this morning. Unlike regular oatmeal, steel cut oats are not rolled or flattened. They maintain a very high amount of the nutrients found in whole oats, unlike quick or instant oats that have been slightly more processed (but are still very healthy).

Here’s a picture of the steel cuts oats (very different that the flat oats you buy in the Quaker package).

Unlike the rolled oats, steel cut requires a longer preparation time for the oats to soften up and become a porridge. But it’s a great way to start a lazy weekend morning – first one up boils waters, throws in the oats, and lets them cook for 45 minutes to an hour. Served with a sprinkle of honey or some fresh fruit atop, this is a healthy start to your day. Adding cinnamon works well too.

A quarter cup (dry) oatmeal will work out to one cup of porridge. the nutrion stats are – 150 calories, 4 grams of protein, 3 grams of fiber, virtually no sugar, no sodium, and only 2.5 grams of fat.

How do you prepare your oatmeal?
