Get Fooducated with our The Mayo clinic ran a small study on 17 adults over the course of 8 nights. They were split into 2 groups. One group slept 80 minutes less than the other. The subjects’ activity and food intake was recorded during the 8 day period. The researchers were surprised to discover that the sleep deprived people consumed 549 more calories per day on average!!! Both groups expended the same amount of energy. According to the scientists, “Less sleep was associated with increased levels of leptin and decreased levels of ghrelin — hormones associated with appetite. The authors say these changes were more likely a consequence, not a cause, of over-eating.” read more… According to recent surveys, one in four adults is sleeping less than 6 hours a night these days. Could sleep deprivation be an explanation for the rising obesity rates in America? The researchers did not want to make such a broad statement, as this study was on a very small group.
