Antibiotic acne treatment has been used extensively over the past 40 years. However, new scientific studies show that people treated with antibiotics for acne were more than twice as likely to develop an upper respiratory tract infection compared to people with acne who were not treated with antibiotics. Breast cancer risk has also increased for women treated with antibiotics for acne or other diseases more often, as the antibiotic treatment disturbs complex mechanisms involving prostaglandins, lymphocytes, and inflammation-boosting cytokines.
