Benzoyl peroxide has long been known to be an allergen and a strong irritant. Its ability to dry out the skin and cause severe flakiness and even skin cracking is well documented. According to the recent study, more than half of the participants treated with benzoyl peroxide suffered from dry skin, flaky and peeling skin, irritations, itch and redness. As a result, acne sufferers used the product only as a spot treatment or only when breakouts seemed worse. One in three patients using benzoyl peroxide stopped using it or switched to an alternative product (Feldman, Chen 2011).
