Healthy Snacks to Go, by Katie from Kitchen Stewardship, is one of my favorite eBooks, so I jumped at the chance to review her newest cookbook, “Smart Sweets“. You can never have too many healthy dessert options (remember, I don’t believe in diets).

Smart Sweets  features all kinds of dessert and treat recipes that are made with healthy ingredients such as:

  • healthy fats
  • unrefined sugars in minimal quantities
  • whole grains
  • fruits & vegetables
  • yogurt and other probiotic-rich foods
  • and more!
Unlike other health food cookbooks, though, it doesn’t require any weird ingredients. There are a few unusual items that not every home cook has in her cupboard, such as spelt flour or stevia, but the vast majority of recipes are readily accessible to everyone.
As is her custom, Katie also provides options for each recipe to make each one even more accessible and versatile to boot. Some recipes come with flavor variations, or ingredient switches. Some also offer different methods, depending on how involved you want to be (and if you know me, then you know the option I will choose…).
Smart Sweets also comes with a key that helps you determine at a glance which recipes are the healthiest in the least amount of time for the cheapest investment. She’s speaking my language here, people.
I look forward to trying quite a few recipes in the book, but especially the Traditional Brownies, Black Bean Brownies and the Whole Wheat Fruit Pizza, among others. But I didn’t readily have the ingredients on hand for those recipes, so I went with another one that intrigued me, the Butternut Spice Bars.
“Bars” is perhaps a misnomer – it’s more like a homegrown souffle, actually. It’s great for dessert or snack, but I also thought it made a delicious and rather healthy breakfast! Can’t beat that – a dessert that doubles as breakfast!
What I loved even more about these bars is the minimal amount of ingredients: 5 total, and among them only 2 measly tablespoons of sweetener. A win all around!
If you want to try these Butternut Spice Bars for breakfast tomorrow, you can! The beauty of our modern digital era is that you can order Smart Sweets now, and have it in your hands within a few minutes. No need to even run out to the store – that wouldn’t help you anyway!
And you know what’s even better? If you order within the next 7 days, Katie has offered my readers a 25% discount, making it only $7.46 (regularly $9.95). Just use the code Quick25 when you check out.
So what are you waiting for? Get smart about your sweets!
